Whether you realize it or not, you’re probably familiar with the work of creative director/director of photography Chris Applebaum. He’s the award-winning director behind music videos for “Umbrella” with Rhianna and “Party in the USA” with Miley Cyrus. And even people literally living in caves are fans of his Carl Jr. commercials; the first being the most aired commercial in the history of television and another driving a 104% increase in traffic. It’s hard to argue with those results.
Growing up in Los Angeles, Chris enjoyed being behind the camera from a young age. When MTV debuted, he knew right away that he wanted to be a music video director. He went to Hampshire College to earn a degree in cinematography and film/video production before getting straight to work becoming a director. After finding success as a music video director, Chris moved into directing commercials where he manages to bring out the sexy in every brand.
There are many reasons why Chris has been able to work with so many celebrities on so many iconic videos and commercials, but one of the most important is that he makes everyone look good. Using the right angles and lighting, Chris makes sure his on-screen talent looks their best. Another big reason is that he’s learned how to work well with everyone. He enjoys the challenge of collaborating with the agency and talent to deliver a story for the brand.
